Scoliosis

Scoliosis, a condition in which the center of the body is bent

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves to the left or right to a certain degree.

Scoliosis can occur at any age and can cause a variety of problems, from simple cosmetic issues to serious, potentially fatal, pressure on the heart or lungs.

Anatomically, a person's spine should be straight when viewed from the front or back.

However, just as straight teeth are rare, so too are straight spines.

Even if teeth are slightly crooked, if they are free of cavities and function 100% without any problems chewing food, they are considered healthy.

Similarly, even if the spine is slightly curved, if it can fully function (support the body, provide mobility, and protect the spinal nerves) without interfering with the nerves, it is considered healthy.

According to organizations that study scoliosis, a sideways curve of 10 degrees or more is diagnosed as scoliosis and is classified as congenital or idiopathic (when the cause is unknown).

Other causes include secondary scoliosis caused by accidents or other diseases.

Early detection before adulthood is crucial.

While scoliosis varies from person to person, early detection before adulthood is crucial. Scoliosis detected during adolescence, when growth plates are active, can help a child grow normally and contribute to the harmonious development of the skeleton.

There are simple ways to diagnose scoliosis at home. First, remove your shirt and look from behind to see if one shoulder is higher or lower. Lean forward and check for rib protrusion to determine if you have scoliosis.

However, if scoliosis symptoms are mild or difficult to discern visually, an X-ray is the most effective method for definitive diagnosis.

Chiropractic treatment methods

General treatment methods include monitoring the condition, preventing spinal curvature through muscle exercises or assistive devices, or in severe cases, surgery to insert a core into the spine to prevent the condition from getting worse.

However, the treatment methods listed above only focus on the symptoms of spinal curvature and try to straighten it out, but often do not understand why the spine is curved in that way.

In chiropractic, the spine is analyzed from a biomechanical perspective. If a bone in the spine is out of its normal position and misaligned to one side, the other bones will rotate in the opposite direction to compensate for this situation, and depending on the degree and location of the misaligned bone, the spine will become curved into a C or S shape.

Scoliosis can also be caused by pelvic misalignment or leg length discrepancies. The longer these symptoms persist, the more likely they are to develop in other areas, like a domino effect. This can lead to longer treatment times and more difficulty achieving complete recovery. The most important thing is not to focus solely on the symptoms of scoliosis, but to identify and manage the underlying cause. If this is done effectively, the symptoms will naturally resolve.
